• Agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have arrested three foreigners wanted by authorities in their country for alleged involvement in economic crimes.
  BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said 56-year old Cheung was was caught in BarangayTambo in Paranaque City.
  Cheung is allegedly wanted by the Public Security Bureau of Fuding City for involvement in economic crimes.
  He allegedly put up dummy real estate companies and defrauded investors of some 40 million RMB, roughly P326 million, on the pretext of high interest rates.
  Also arrested were Chau Mut Hing, 63; and Zhang Yi, 50, in a business establishment in New Seaside Drive, Parañaque City.
  Tansingco said that the two are facing criminal charges in Shanghai for oil smuggling and production of counterfeit commodities.
  BI fugitive search unit chief Rendell Ryan Sy said that the trio were turned over to the BI’s detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig City pending deportation.

• Senator Risa Hontiveros has called on the government to thoroughly investigate Bureau of Immigration (BI) officials, saying the Chinese mafia involved in human trafficking of Filipinos may have more connections working within the agency.
  Hontiveros, at the same time, called for an overhaul of the agency to ensure the protection of Filipinos leaving the country’s borders.
  “Marami nang napabalitang nasibak pero tuluy-tuloy parin ang pagre-recruit ng mga Pilipino para mangscam. May mga contact pa ba ang sindikato sa loob ng BI? Bakit hindi ito maampat? (It has been reported that many people have been fired, but Filipinos are still being recruited to scam. Does the syndicate still have contacts within BI? Why can’t this be stopped?)” the senator asked.
  Hontiveros, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, on Wednesday, January 25 continued the panel’s probe into the reported outbound human trafficking of Filipinos who are forced to work as cryptocurrency scammers in Myanmar and also Cambodia.
  The senator pointed out she has already urged a BI overhaul in the wake of the committee’s investigation into the so-called “pastillas” scam two years ago, but nothing seems to have changed.
  “With the volume of trafficked Filipinos still in Cambodia and Myanmar, the BI, as our last line of defense against trafficking, clearly has some shaping up to do. The BI has to regroup and repair the entirety of their agency,” Hontiveros emphasized.

• President Ferdinand Marcos R. Marcos Jr. has accepted recommendations from the private sector to extend e-Visa upon arrival to Chinese and Indian nationals and the implementation of VAT Refund Scheme for Tourists (VRST) to further boost tourism in the country.
  In a statement, the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) said the President accepted the group’s Tourism Sector additional quick-win recommendations based on private sector experience and expertise during their meeting last Jan. 26.

• 2 Chinese convicted of kidnap for ransom

  Two Chinese nationals have been convicted of kidnap for ransom by the Paranaque City regional trial court (RTC), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
  The NBI, in a statement, said convicted were Zhihua Liu and Yuqiong Zhu who were found guilty of kidnapping their compatriot Zheng Xibing from whom they demanded about P1 million in 2020.
  “On Dec. 2, 2022, the RTC, Branch 295, Paranaque City rendered judgment finding the two (2) accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the crime of Kidnapping for Ransom and were sentenced to suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment without eligibility for parole,” the NBI said.
  It said those found guilty were arrested by the NBI’s Task Force Against Illegal Drugs (NBI-TFAID) at Nuwa Hotel in the City of Dreams, Paranaque City on Dec. 13, 2020.
  It said the NBI-TFAID acted on the report by Zheng Xibing’s friend on the kidnapping.
  Quoting from the RTC’s decision, the NBI said: “The prosecution was able to establish the existence of all the elements of Kidnapping for Ransom, as the accused conspired, and willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously kidnapped Zheng Xibing and detained him inside a room at Nuwa Hotel, City of Dreams, Paranaque City for the purpose of ransom in the amount of RMB 136,000 equivalent to Php 1 Million.”

• 据泰国媒体报导，泰国总理巴育周三表示，任何参与以受雇方式向中国游客提供贵宾服务的警员，将会根据法律遭到处罚。
  此前，一段网络影片引发轩然大波：一名中国女游客声称向泰国警方支付数千泰铢，以换取曼谷机场的“贵宾式接机服务”，包括由警员安排快速入境，并由警察护送她前往芭堤雅的酒店。
  据报道，这名游客入境时有警察先以电单车开路，途中更拉了警笛，将平日需要三小时的路程压缩至一小时。
  《曼谷邮报》引述泰国警方发言人阿察庸说，泰国全国警察总长丹戎萨已下令彻查这起事件，并指这是警队之耻。
  报导指，警方已确认在影片中出现的部分警察身份，已开展调查他们有否以权谋私。
