Chinese national charged with 2021 sex crime in St. Clair County

A Chinese national and fugitive wanted in St. Clair County for an alleged 2021 sex crime has been charged, officials said Wednesday.

Zhijie Wang, 56, was arraigned last Thursday in 72nd District Court in Port Huron on a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said.

A judge set bond at $100,000 and scheduled his next court hearing for Tuesday. He remained housed at the St. Clair County Jail on Wednesday.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Wang’s attorney, David Kelley, had no comment about the case, he said Wednesday.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office first began investigating allegations against Wang in 2021, officials said.

After they started their investigation, he fled the state, according to authorities.

The sheriff’s office did not provide details of the alleged crime.

Investigators said they received help from Homeland Security officers and determined in January that Wang was living in California.

Detectives obtained an extradition warrant for Wang. They worked with Homeland Security officials, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Los Angeles Police Department to arrest Wang on May 2 at the Los Angeles International Airport.

Police held Wang at a detention center until he could be returned to Michigan last Thursday.

据警长办公室发布的新闻稿，王志杰，56岁，在2021年首次成为圣克莱尔县侦探局的调查对象：他涉嫌在密西根州一家按摩店内对一名46岁的女性实施性犯罪。

当警方开展初步调查后，王志杰闻讯并立马逃离了密西根州，直至今日已逃亡3年之久。

经过长达数年的追踪和调查，侦探们于2024年1月发现王志杰在加州有居住痕迹。随后，侦探局通过县检察官办公室获得了完整的引渡令，并在美国海关和边境保护局的协助下，于5月2日在洛杉矶国际机场将王志杰成功拘留。

目前，王志杰已被提审，并因3级性行为罪被暂时关押在圣克莱尔县监狱。他的保释金被设定为10万元。
