MOUNT BALDY, Calif. (KABC) — An El Monte woman who went missing while hiking in the Mount Baldy area amid the recent winter storm was found dead, authorities said.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the body of Lifei “Ada” Huang was recovered early Sunday morning. Authorities said on Saturday, someone flying a drone in the area had reported possibly seeing Huang.
“Deputies and search and rescue team members responded to the upper San Antonio Creek Falls area but were unable to hike to the spot where Ms. Huang was believed to be, due to the conditions on the mountain,” said the sheriff’s department in a statement.
Sherriff’s aviation crews were also unable to perform an aerial search on Saturday due to high winds.
Search and rescue team members spent the night in the area near the location to preserve the scene, authorities said.
The following morning, around 7:45 a.m., crews hoisted medics down to the location, where Huang was found dead.
“We would like to thank all our personnel and volunteers that aided in the search, as well as the citizen that alerted U.S. Forestry,” said the sheriff’s department.
Huang, 22, had told her friends and family she was going for a hike on the mountain last weekend. Then the powerful storm rolled in.
An official cause of death has not been released.
Body of woman who vanished on Mt. Baldy recovered

The body of a hiker who went missing on Mount Baldy was recovered Sunday morning, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Lifei Huang, 22, from El Monte was last seen alive on Feb. 4, when she went out on a solo hike at around 2 p.m. that day.
Crews searched the area throughout the week but were forced to retreat due to increasingly unsafe conditions after a winter snowstorm hit the area.
On Saturday, a citizen told the U.S. Forest Service that they believed they spotted Huang from a drone. Deputies along with search and rescue crews were dispatched and tried to reach the location, but were unable to do so due to unsafe conditions.
It was not until around 7:45 a.m. Sunday that a sheriff’s department air rescue aircraft recovered Huang’s body from the location, law enforcement officials confirmed.
“We would like to thank all our personnel and volunteers that aided in the search, as well as the citizen that alerted U.S. Forestry,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
Huang’s cause of death was not immediately released.
Body of woman is found on Mt. Baldy a week after she went hiking alone during storm
FEB. 11, 2024
The body of an El Monte woman who disappeared while hiking alone on Mt. Baldy was recovered Sunday morning, ending a treacherous, weeklong search, officials said.
Lifei “Ada” Huang, 22, disappeared about two hours into a solo trek Feb. 4, just as the worst of last week’s historic storms hit Southern California, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
Huang was reported missing just before midnight; rescue crews went out to search for her around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 5. But “extreme” snowfall and avalanche risks stymied their efforts, officials said.
Three other hikers were rescued Feb. 7 after getting pinned down by the storms the day before on the Bear Canyon Trail.
“Resources are stretched to their limits, and hikers who get lost may have to wait long periods of time before help is available,” the Sheriff’s Department had warned.
Mt. Baldy has become one of the country’s deadliest destinations for hikers, racking up scores of rescues and almost a dozen deaths in recent years. The Sheriff’s Department has pushed to limit access to the peak.
But Huang was an experienced adventurer, her Instagram page shows.
She had recently hiked the Wave, a difficult and sometimes dangerous rock formation in the Arizona desert. She enjoyed beach camping in Santa Cruz, stargazing in Joshua Tree and snowboarding in the San Gabriel Mountains.
Friends posted notes to her page praying she would be home to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
On Saturday, the Sheriff’s Department got a tip that someone flying a drone may have spotted Huang’s body near the San Antonia Creek Falls.
High winds kept the air rescue team from searching the area until early Sunday, when medics located Huang’s remains.
