Lingerie manufacturer Caely diversifies into face masks, PPE for exports

Caely Holdings Bhd has branched out into face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) production targeting Germany, the US, Australia, Saudi Arabia and India.

Bursa Malaysia-listed Caely currently deals in manufacturing, retail, export and direct sales of undergarments, household products and property development and construction.

The company sees the diversification as a good opportunity to broaden revenue streams under its manufacturing segment, as well as obtain income sources from new product types other than its traditional undergarment business.

Caely said its wholly-owned Marywah Industries (M) Sdn Bhd had on May 14 signed a product manufacturing agreement with Ni Hsin Marketing Sdn Bhd (NHM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ni Hsin Resources Bhd.

Marywah will be the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of NHM’s brand name products which mainly consist of fabric face masks (under the brand name of Masketeer – Coolmax Fibre Protective Mask) and PPE.

The agreement is valid until December 31 2022.

Caely said the face masks that they produce would help protect against virus transmission and are washable for up to 30 times after each use.

As for PPE, the company is currently manufacturing protective suits which are urgently needed for healthcare workers and certain frontliners in the fight against Covid-19.

Caely executive chairman Datin Fong Nyok Yoon said it had been receiving orders from five companies since March.

Four of them were local and one from overseas, she added.

“The sole overseas order came from Germany, and we are working on further inquiries from the US, Australia, Saudi Arabia and India. We foresee there will be more inquiries in the future, as social habits are changing and wearing face masks are becoming a norm in our lives,” Fong added.

Caely is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of lingerie in Malaysia.

Currently, the company is able to synergise and optimise existing machinery at its manufacturing facility in Teluk Intan, Perak to manufacture the new products.

“As a company involved in the textile and apparel industry, we made a timely and sensible decision to modify our existing production to diversify into manufacturing face masks and PPE.

“Under Marywah, we have actually been producing various types of face masks for other companies both locally and overseas since the virus outbreak but in a relatively small scale.

Henceforth, we are ready to produce these items on a larger scale based on our existing capabilities in terms of skills and plant facilities,” Fong said.

She added that while the undergarment business was still healthy, Caely would be dividing its focus to grow the new segment.

“Although the Covid-19 pandemic and slow economy performance in Malaysia has affected our other segments, it is important that we continue to be innovative and resourceful in finding additional sources of revenue to sustain through this challenging time,” she said.
